1. First of all, the purpose of good storage is to help you keep organized. (Contrary to what your spouse or teenagers might say, its not merely to hide monster messes where theyll get forgotten or require tons of time to sort through whenever someones looking for something!)

Rollaway storage  with lockable wheels  can tuck into a stall built into a lower cabinet, island, closet or under a sink. Or roll into place for being used under a table, desk or countertop. Ideal for laundry hampers and garbage cans; a cart for tableware (from walk-in pantry to the table and from the dishwasher back to the pantry); file cabinets; a stack of drawers; containers for toys, equipment, gift wrapping or craft supplies; an entire island; a wagon or cart to wheel around the house while putting various items it contains wherever they belong; and so much more.

2. There must be adequate storage space for all your current belongings, plus space for your future acquisitions. And if you’re likely to start a family while living in this house, that may mean you need as much space to grow into as youll fill when you move in.

Pullout shelves, bins, baskets and racks in lower cabinets allow easy access to their contents. Dont forget to add these under sinks, with cutouts that fit around the plumbing. No more getting down on your hands and knees to see and find things! And with these, you can get to  and therefore use  the space thats even at the very back of your cabinets.

3. Next, Id be sure each storage area is appropriate for whatever you plan to store, and that each has compartments appropriate for its contents. That means your sports equipment needs space that’s different from the space for your music and video collections.

For hanging table linens, dowels bolted onto the back walls or mounted on a frame bolted to the sides or bottom of pantries, closets or cabinets make linens easily accessible while minimizing creases and fold lines. No more digging to the bottom of a drawer of folded linens to find a favorite tablecloth, or having to empty the entire drawer to get it out! And no more linens that are too wrinkled to use as is! This is also a great way to use a narrow area of otherwise wasted space.

4. Plan storage scattered throughout the whole house. Ideally, everything will be stored near where youll be using it. No point in hauling stuff through half the house!

Youll love having closets and cabinets  the pantry, too  whose lights go on automatically as their doors open, the way a refrigerators does. (One of the many benefits of built-in cabinets is the inside lighting thats possible.) No more groping to find manual light switches, especially when your hands are often too full to reach for a switch  or theyre wet! This is also wonderful for kids  and adults in wheelchairs  who cant easily reach a closets traditional light switch. A plunger switch is inside most refrigerators, but magnetic contact switches  similar to those used in home security alarm systems  can also do the job throughout your house.

5. Id also plan for your most frequently used items to be easiest and quickest to reach, and to store your less frequently used things in the remaining space only after all the popular things are stored.

Electrical outlets inside drawers, cabinets or in appliance barns on countertops allow small appliances to be stored out of sight and used without frequent plugging and unplugging. (Ideally, everything you store in these spaces will be used nearby so you wont need any extension cords.) You avoid countertop clutter, the items never get dusty and are always ready to use, and no one needs to fiddle with the plugs  especially when their hands are wet or arthritic. Just be sure to measure the sizes of the appliances you plan to store before you finalize these spaces dimensions, so you avoid any surprises about something not fitting inside.

6. Your largest and heaviest possessions also need to be the easiest and quickest to get to, and not be put up high or in a corner thats tricky to navigate. Fill the remaining storage spaces with your lightweight items.

Separate activity areas in the kitchen will make everything efficiently at hand exactly where you need it: baking and mixing, food preparation, cooking, cleanup, entertaining, beverage service, etc.

7. Be sure storage minimizes wasted space.

Hang a detachable hamper inside a pullout or tiltout lower cabinet door or storage bench, or inside a closet door. A cloth hamper hanging on a frame makes transporting clothes or linens to the washing machine especially easy, but wire or plastic hampers also work. No more dropping items on the way to the laundry room that you might trip over! Choose materials that allow ventilation in the hamper, to prevent mold from forming on any damp or wet items that remain inside for more than a few days.

8. Make your storage spaces accessible, so none of them are wasted because they cant easily be reached.

Full-extension drawers, pullout shelves and file cabinets  all on easy-gliding metal tracks  allow you to reach and see all their contents, so you can use all their space.

9. Id also look at traffic flows in the house. If your most frequently used items are stored in the major traffic paths, no one will have to go out of their way to get what they need, and youll have a very efficient house. On the other hand, you can also affect where the traffic detours through the house via where you store popular items. So if you want to stop frequent bottlenecks where people tend to collide with each other, you can move the popular items into different locations in order to force some of the traffic to flow along new paths.

Adequate clearance around every open drawer, hinged cabinet or door, and appliance door will keep traffic flowing and save you some steps. Be sure you have room to open and move around all the drawers and cabinets you need to open at once when youre emptying the dishwasher, putting groceries away, working on a project, etc.

10. My final point is to make as much of the storage adjustable as possible, so as your needs change, the storage that worked for you initially can be modified to remain as effective as ever.

Open shelving  or you can remove some cabinet doors  gives you instant identification of and access to your stored goods. Stored items get more light around them and are easier to see, the motion of opening cabinets is not required, and this saves some trial and error if you dont recall precisely whats stored where.

We are a small group of enthusiastic golfers and a couple of times per year we take a weekend off and leave for some place to play golf, enjoy the leave and our own company. If you have done that or just stayed in hotels or vacation rentals of any kind, you know what kind of mattresses and pillows there are.

In some european countries they also have these three feet long sausage-like pillows. Some too hard, you almost break your neck, and some so soft that it will not even work if you manage to double-fold it.

The mattress is of course too big to bring on a vacation but the Tempur pillow is easy to bring. Its smaller than an ordinary pillow and I just take it in a bag. The pillow is most important to me, I sleep great when I use it and not too great without it. It makes a big difference.

It was in the early 90s when I first learned about Tempur. A physiotherapist that trained our group in the pool showed us. After one of the training sessions one of the guys was complaining about how bad he used to sleep and our trainer asked him to try the mattress and pillow she had in the treatment room.

Some of us tried it for a couple of minutes and yes, perhaps this could be something for us. I bought it a couple of months later. Both a pillow and a mattress. UPS delivered and the mattress had to stretch out a couple of hours before I could use it. I could hardly wait to try it and used it the same first night.

I remember that the first couple of nights felt unusual. The Tempur mattress is just like heaven, I could sleep much longer before I had to turn to the other side and there were no pressure on knees and hips any more.

Earlier that kind of pressure made me use a thin extra pillow that I could have under or between my legs. Perhaps you have had that kind of experience too and it doesnt matter if you are thin or fat. Now its really a relief to sleep better, wake up and just feel relaxed and great.

The Tempur pillow took me a couple of nights to get used to. I have to admit that, and I think the reason was that it seem to be too small. It is not. The form is perfect to give your head the right balance and its in different sizes now, which is great as we are not all of the same size over the shoulders. After some time I also learned to turn the pillow in the mornings so I then sleep on the lower part. Guess that can have to do with the fact that Im more relaxed and my shoulders not tense at all.

I have used these products for more than twelve years now and also bought one more pillow. Needless to say, but I will stick to Tempur for the rest of my life.

There are a couple reasons for improving the energy efficiency in your home. You may realize we are impacting our environment and want to do your part to stop this. On the other hand, you may be tired of paying ever increasing utility bills. Regardless, you are ready to do something, but need to take a quick break before jumping in.

Most people automatically think the biggest cost associated with energy use in their home is heating it in winter and cooling it in summer. This would certainly seem to make sense from a logical perspective. In the case of energy, however, logical fails the test.

The biggest use of energy in your home is heating your water. This may be surprising at first, but think it through. How many times a day is the shower or bath cranked on? How many times a week is the dishwasher cranked on? Do you have a pool? How about a Jacuzzi? Each of these energy requirements adds up very quickly, particularly hot water for showers and dishwashers. The good news is you can make relatively painless home improvements to address these issues.

There is no denying we all need to take showers each dayat least I hope! To improve your shower energy use, there are a couple of basic steps you can take. First, get a low flow shower head. They cost a few bucks, but restrict the volume of water coming out. The less hot water used, the less your water heater has to crank up. Dont worry, you will not notice a difference. Second, consider going with a solar water heater or a tankless system. Solar works best because there are no energy requirements from your utility, but a tankless water heater has advantages as well because it does not waste energy by firing up over and over during the day when you are not home. Regardless, just make the change.

As to dishwashers, there are two solutions. Again, solar water heaters overcome the problem by heating the water without tapping your utility lines. If you arent ready for that, get an energy efficient dishwasher. You are looking for a product that has an Energy Star rating. The rating signifies the dishwasher is designed to minimize energy use with a savings of at least 25 percent compared to traditional machines.

Going green is not nearly as painful as most people think. Making small changes, such as how you heat your water, can make a major difference to both the environment and your utility bill.

The Solar Heating Aspect You Have Never Heard of Before

The power of the sun is immense. The energy in one day of sunlight is more than the world needs. The problem, of course, is how does one harness this power. Solar panels represent the obvious solution, but they have their downside. First, they can be expensive depending upon your energy needs. Second, they do not exactly blend in with the rest of your home.

Passive solar heating represents a panel free method of harnessing the inherent energy found in the sun for heating purposes. If you come out from a store and open the door of your car in the summer, you understand the concept of passive solar heating. A wide variety of material absorbs sunlight and radiates the energy back into the air in the form of heat. Passive solar heating for a home works the same way as the process which overheats your car in the parking lot.

Many people, however, cannot take maximum advantage of passive solar strategies. The primary problem is a home needs to be built with a particular orientation to the sun. This orientation allows the home to maximize the heat penetration throughout the year. A relatively small number of people actually build their own homes, so you can see we have an inherent problem. There is, however, one little trick that every home can use to take advantage of solar heating.

Certain materials have high thermal masses. This essentially means they absorb a high percentage of the energy in sunlight, but release it slowly. For practical purposes, this means they radiate heat well after the sun has gone down. You, my friend, can take advantage of this.

Dark gravel has a high thermal mass. It sucks up sunlight like a sponge and will radiate heat for hours after the sun goes down. Although you probably are not going to tear down your home to take advantage of passive solar strategies, you can get some of the benefits by using gravel in a strategic manner.

The idea is to place gravel on the ground below any windows on the ground floor of your home. During the summer, you landscape with plants that shade the gravel since you really dont want extra heat at that time. When winter hits, however, the gravel should be exposed. It will suck up the energy of the sun all day and then radiate it vertically across the windows for a few hours after dark. This creates an island of heat and great reduces the release of heat from the interior of the home through the windows.

Obviously, this tricky gravel approach is not an end all solution for your heating problems. You should, however, be able to notice a difference in your heating bills of maybe five percent depending on your house design. Given the small amount of effort involved, that will equate to a nice savings over the years.
