Home mold presents serious health hazards to you and your family. However, it is not hard to prevent mold once you know what exactly is mold, how to identify it, and what are the techniques you can utilize to prevent it.

So What is Mold?

Mold is a type of fungus that grows from spores and is essential for the breakdown of dead plant and animal matter. Mold spores are usually inactive, but they will become active if humidity levels exceeds70% or if the temperature goes above 65 degrees. Mold exists everywhere in the environment, it may be found indoors and outdoors. Mold is often found in damp or wet areas, this why it is so common in places such as the basement and bathroom and outdoor in grass and hay. People come in touch with mold everyday. Mold is what causes food to spoil, wood to rot, and paper to smell musty.

How to Identify Mold?

Mold is the black grwth you often see on wet window sills. If you store paper or fabrics in a damp place you might get the musty smell that is cause by the action of molds. Active mold growth is slimy and is usually green, black, orange or purple. When inactive mold is dry and looks like a powder. It is usually white when dry. In its early phases, molds may look like a web while when in full bloom it looks like a miniature bush. Even when molds are unseen, wet spots or dampness can indicate a problem and molds will eventually follow. If you suspect that a spot is moldy, you can perform a simple test to find out if the spot is really mold. Touch the suspected spot with a small drop of bleach and see if the stain loses its color or disappears. If it does, it may be mold. If there is no change, it is probably not mold. Another good way to tell if mold is present is odor. Mold usually has a musty smell that can indicate the presence of molds even if they are invisible.

Defining Moldy Areas

There are 3 common terms used to define a moldy area:

Extensive: A mold area is defined extensive if there is a single area of mold that is larger than 32square feet. If there are less than three patches of mold, each smaller than 10 square feet, is considered a “small” area mold. The definition of moderate area is given if there are more than three patches but each patch is smaller than 10 square feet or if there is on patch, larger than 10 square feet but smaller than 32 square feet

This week we are going to continue our series on single pane window glass repair. Let’s talk about broken glass in a fixed window, usually referred to as a picture window. The most common type will have metal stops on the outside, around all four edges of the window glass. Sometimes these stops will be held in place with screws, and other times there will be aluminum stops that snap in place. In some rare instances there will be a rubber material in place of metal. If you have the screw type, you remove all of the screws and each piece will come out. If you have the metal snap in stops, carefully pry the stop from the frame using a small, flat screwdriver or a putty knife. You want to start in a corner and work along the stop until it comes out. Don’t pry too much because the stops can bend very easily. If you have the rubber type, pry a corner away using the screwdriver, grab it with your fingers, and pull out the rubber. The glass shouldn’t fall out because there is a glue or tape on the edge, holding the glass in place.

From here, You can get your measurements for the new piece of glass. The glass edges will be exposed, and you can hook your tape measure to the edge and get your width and height. If there is a hole in the glass, measure the glass thickness. If there isn’t a hole, put on some gloves and carefully push on the glass where the crack is located. This will expose the edge so you can measure it. When you go to get the new glass, you’re going to need a tube of silicone to replace the glue or tape holding the glass in place. Once you get the glass home, you need to remove the old glass. Go inside and cut between the glass and frame using a utility knife with a new blade. This will cut away the silicone or tape that is holding the old glass. Be sure to wear heavy gloves during this process to avoid getting cut. Start at the top and cut across from one corner to the other. Then cut down one side, from top to bottom. Do the other side the same way. At this point the glass should fall out. You should place a tarp or sheet under the window to catch the glass as it falls out. Using a stiff putty knife, scrape off the old silicone or tape from the frame. If there were setting blocks on the bottom, be sure to reuse them. They act as shims to raise the glass off the bottom.

Now run a bead of silicone about 3/16″ thick around the perimeter of the opening. Grab your new glass on the sides, angle the bottom in and the top out, set the glass on the setting blocks, then slowly raise the glass up into place. Push just hard enough that all four edges of the glass contact the silicone, but not so hard that the glass makes contact with the metal frame. Install your outside stops. Don’t clean the glass for 24 hours so the silicone can set up.

Window blinds have been in usage for long time now covering windows preventing entry of light. The historic evolution of blinds are not very clear, but there are theories that blinds were first designed and used in Venice if one were to go by the popular blind type.

People have been using window blinds for privacy also in addition to light preventing Sun light and eventually heat in summer. Although there are many types of window blinds, one which is a hit with every one is the Venetian blinds.

Varieties of Window Blinds

When we distinguish blinds according to their making, we can differentiate door and window blinds just by their respective sizes. The different kinds of blinds are as follows.

At the top are Venetian blinds because of their popularity. The slats of the blinds are made of plastic or metal. Wooden slats and bamboo slats are not unusual and they are known by their respective names only. For example wooden blinds and bamboo blinds. The usual width of slats is 50 mm but you can occasionally find someone using blinds of upto 120 mm width too. One window on a wide wall having 120 mm slats add to the aesthetics of the room. Venetian blinds have a couple of equally popular variants too.

1. Mini blinds; here the slats are pretty narrow and you cant expect it to be wider than 19 mm.

2. Vertical blinds; slats are vertical here thus giving it the name. Additionally, you can find the slats made of stiffen fabric. It is possible to turn the slats by 90 degrees when they hang from their ends from a guide rail.

Slat type window blinds open by turning in place which is facilitated by turning rotator attachments connected to strings.

There are special types in window blinds, such as solid blinds referring to those which can be opened by pulling up or by pushing up only. These cant be opened in place as they are made of one solid sheet material. Examples of these are here.

Holland Blinds: One most common Holland blind type is woven wood blind, woven by simple strings so that they can just roll up or fold up to open. These are preferred in tropical conditions because of their higher efficiency in Sun control. The natural appearance gives an exquisite feel and gels totally with the ambience.

Pleated Blinds: Stiffened fabric made blinds just pull-up to open and when pulled up they fit the recess at the top.

Honeycomb Blinds: You can call these as cellular shades also because of their two or more layered cellular construction. These provide better insulation thanks to their cellular design.

SED Wood counter tops, a consistent choice for modern kitchens.

453

Wood countertops are becoming popular again in modern kitchens. We now know that wooden countertops, when properly cared for, are both long lasting and sanitary. The modern adhesives are strong enough to keep the wood staves bonded together even the butcher block is submerged into the water. The finishing oils (mineral oils) are safe in contact with food products and preserve the wood surfaces.

The solid wood, as a material of choice for counter tops, exhibits incontestable advantages such as:

Aesthetics
Imparting a warm, relaxing feeling, the wooden top is the natural complement of any solid wood or veneered cabinetry. The wooden tops will wonderfully go together with hardwood floorings, moldings, cornices and mantels, conferring a genuine sense of balance to your kitchen space.

Functionality
A hardwood top is very easy to cut to templates and even easier to install. Unlike the solid surface or laminate, wood tops have a minimum of chemical components, which make them extremely safe in contact with foods. Unlike the other countertop materials, any occurring scratch can be easily removed by sanding the area; the wood tops actually constitute the only known surface that can be renewed without employing special tools or requiring special skills. Hardwood surfaces can be used as kitchen island tops, inserted sink covers, sections of countertop, or as butcher block hidden under the countertop that can be pulled as drawer or cart. Your imagination will surely find plenty of other interesting, visually attractive applications.

Durability
If properly sealed and installed, a wooden top can literally last a lifetime. Unlike marble, granite or tile, the wooden tops have a great shock absorbing capacity that further assures considerable life span.

Hygiene
For a quite few decades, the plastic and laminate surfaces, due to their non-porous structure were considered much safer than wood for applications such as chopping meat or slicing vegetables. The wood, because of its porosity was thought an ideal surface for harmful bacteria like Salmonella, Staphylococus or Escherichia coli to thrive. However, a study undertaken in 1993 by the microbiologists of Wisconsin Food Research Institute and another one carried out in 1998 at university of Florida discovered the strong antibacterial properties that wood surfaces exhibit, properties that no other cutting surface appears to possess.
According to these studies and to others that followed them, on wood surfaces, bacterial populations disappear quite fast, without external intervention, while on plastic surfaces they persist and actually multiply. Although these properties vary among wood species, the wooden cutting surfaces are increasingly accepted as the first choice of health-conscious individuals.

There is nothing more luxurious to a desert dweller than entering their cool home on a sultry afternoon. Cool as in temperature cool. It is so easy to get spoiled living in a centrally cooled home with a central air unit. Each room is as cool as the next. I have known people who wore a sweater in their air conditioned home rather than attempting to find a setting that is cooler than the outdoor temperature yet not freezing cold. These people have a lot of expendable cash and dont mind their huge energy bills. I have separate air conditioners in my windows, and I even have a portable air conditioner to deal with my cooling requirements.

On the other hand, I have to watch my energy consumption, and that includes my air conditioning bill during the summer months. I wait until the temperature inside is too high to be made tolerable with a fan. That is when my window air conditioning units pay for themselves. On the other hand, some people say that re-cooling the house every day expends more energy than always leaving it at one temperature. In my case, my method works best for me, according to my electric bill!

The only areas I cool are the rooms in which I live. This eliminates the bathrooms, laundry room, pantry and porch areas. In the cool of the evening, I open my windows and let the cool air enter. I close the curtains and windows in the morning before the sun comes up. If I am out of the house during the day, the units are shut off. When I return in the evening, the units are turned on the lowest setting it will take to make the rooms I am using comfortable. I dont cool my bedroom until an hour before bedtime.

If I am home during the day, the windows and curtains stay shut. The units are turned on the lowest setting possible. I confine myself to the immediate living areas; kitchen, living room or den. The unit in my bedroom is shut off. A cool shower during the day helps me to acclimate to the temperature. I dont want to have to cool the house because I have worked up a sweat cleaning or exercising.

These few, simple tips keep my energy bill down and help me to stay comfortable in the heat of summer.
