Finding your deck railing idea will depend on many factors. Foremost, you need to find which of the styles out there would match better into your home decoration. A nice idea is to combine the benefit of the garden with the warmness of a living room. The decision is into your mind and up to you.

Railing Materials And Styles

Most rails materials look and feel attractive and match almost any deck railing style or home decoration. If you want to invest your money in deck flooring and sophisticated railings that have a natural yet long lasting appeal. You would certainly benefit from considering composite over other synthetics.

Since iron railings are probably the most beautiful amongst all railing styles, they need over time a proper care. An iron railing may lead to corrosion and rust or decay if an you do an improper care. Water is the most common culprit in these cases, but a good lacquer and cleaning may minimize corrosion over time.

Wooden railings offer many benefits over other traditional materials such as brick, stone or metal. For one anyone can install a railing made of wood with just a few supplies and a couple of hours time on their hands.

Many homeowners add better wrought iron railings than wooden ones because of their long-lasting and reliability, amongst many others characteristics, such as the maintenance. While pleasant to view and durability an iron railing does present some unique challenges to consider.

In terms of maintenance, the best choice may be the cedar ones, because they are both practical and easy to maintain. You can also add cedar furniture into the decoration style. It use to be very lightweight and can be moved around the deck surface. Getting a high contrast of elements you wish may be easier with cedar. Again, how to get a natural style or design for your house depends on you.

Installing your deck railing

Finishing nails, a saw, drill, measuring tape, finials, balusters and posts are all important components of professional looking rails. You can buy a majority of the supplies you need whether for a traditional or Victorian style railing online; if this is the deck railing idea chosen, at your local home improvement supply store or at a lumberyard.

The 3rd Biggest Cause Of Death!

It will surprise you!
Did you know that if you become ill and you put yourself in the hands of ‘mainstream’ medical care and need to be admitted to a hospital that the chances of you dying from an unrelated problem are high?
In fact, in the USA, deaths from ‘iatrogenic’ cause rank # 3 after Heart Diseases and Cancer!
Let me explain what ‘iatrogenic’ means. This is a term used when a patient dies as a direct result of treatments by a physician, whether it is from misdiagnosis of the ailment or from adverse drug reactions used to treat the illness. (drug reactions are the most common cause).
This article will provide you with some facts which you should be aware of. I am not presenting these facts in order to have a ‘shot’ at physicians or indeed for that matter, hospitals.
‘HEALTH CARE SYSTEM’ IS OUT OF CONTROL!
The facts you are about to read are purely symptoms of a system that is largely out of control. Out of control, thanks largely to the overbearing influence that the pharmaceutical industry has on mainstream medicine.
Mainstream medicine has for some decades now placed more emphasis on medical intervention as opposed to primary care, prevention, and helping the body heal itself by natural methods.
Click here for more information on 9 Best Cloud Hosting Providers and Services Dynomoon. Or click here if you’re looking for information on How to Delete Messages on iPhone for both people The Best Way 2022.The researcher who wrote the article is Dr Barbara Starfield, MD, MPH, of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.
Now let’s review what Dr Starfield has unearthed!
‘THE FACTS’ Are…
2,000 deaths/year from unnecessary surgery
7,000 deaths/year from medication errors in hospitals
20,000 deaths/year from other errors in hospitals
80,000 deaths/year from nosocomial infections in hospitals
106,000 deaths/year from non-error, adverse effects of medications
These total up to 225,000 deaths per year in the US from iatrogenic causes which ranks these deaths as the # 3 killer.
Well above motor vehicle accidents and violent crime.
One of the most sobering components of these statistics, although I don’t find it surprising is that 106,000 of these deaths result from CORRECTLY prescribed medications. In other words the physicians were not to blame. They just administered the drugs as per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
MORE DEATHS FROM LEGAL DRUGS THAN FROM ILLICIT ONES
Fascinating isn’t it… when you consider that deaths from legal drugs far exceed deaths from illicit drugs and yet these deaths go virtually unnoticed and nobody makes a fuss!
Dr Starfield also warns that these figures only tell one part of the overall story.

They only relate to DEATHS from HOSPITALIZED patients.
They do NOT include non fatal adverse effects such as disability or discomfort.

Even if you make it through the hospitalization process you are not ‘out of the woods’. Consider these further facts. 4% – 18% of patients experience further negative effects in outpatient settings resulting in the following:

116 million extra physician visits
77 million extra prescriptions
17 million emergency department visits
8 million hospitalizations
3 million long-term admissions
199,000 additional deaths
$77 billion in extra costs

IS THIS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG?
With human nature being as it is you can rest assured that the above ‘official’ figures are just the ‘tip of the iceberg’. I have no doubt that for each ‘official’ iatrogenic death that there are others which are recorded as ‘legitimate’ deaths.
As an example … when a patient dies of a heart attack in hospital whilst being treated for something else its easy enough to dismiss it as ‘bad luck’ and write it off to the fact that the patient had a bad heart and that they just happened to be in hospital at the time when the heart attack occurred.
Is the hospital or physician going to tell the patient’s family that perhaps some of the treatments the patient was having could have precipitated the heart ‘event’? In these days of litigation I don’t think so… if they can avoid it.
I have no doubt that hospitals are the equal of politicians when it comes to ‘cover ups’.
OK, I’ve said my bit about this problem and I am sure that you have the message, so what’s the point of knowing these sad facts?
Avoid falling into the hands of hospitals and the ‘health’ system, because it can make you sick…OR EVEN KILL YOU! This means that you must be constantly aware of the health demands on your body such as the need to give it correct food, adequate exercise and rest, and of course adequate intakes of essential nutrients.
Liken it to your car… give it poor fuel and neglect the maintenance and it will either run badly or stop altogether.
IT’S NOT NATURAL TO BE ILL
Illness is UNNATURAL and can generally be avoided. The cause of almost all illness is people doing unnatural things to their body, whether it is due to the environment they live in, the food and liquids that they ingest, or living the life of a ‘couch potato’. Each person controls their own health OR illness, not their physician or their ‘Health Care’ provider.
I am sure that you are aware that the average diet is very much lacking in essential nutrients due to the high level of food processing, as well as exposure to toxins such as pesticides.
The lack of these essential nutrients has been shown to ‘trigger’ off many ailments which can start a cascade effect and lead to serious problems in the future.
The lack of these nutrients can be largely overcome in most people by dietary supplementation. The problem is getting ALL the nutrients into your body in the correct proportion.
It is imperative that you explore your options and consider a professional supplement regimen that can provide you with the essential nutrients missing from the standard diet. A high quality supplement can help to prevent you from becoming an iatrogenic victim.

Carpets are one of the most romanticized consumer items which have a long history dating back to 4th millennium BC. The romance still lingers on in the Arabian world which is evident from the value they place on owning expensive carpets. A gold laced pure wool carpet was among the wedding gifts received by the reigning Sheikh of Saudi Arabia in 1978.

Carpets and rugs are not the same as is confusedly interchanged by some people. While carpets are generally used as floor coverings rugs are used on beds and tables.

Types of Carpets

Carpets can be classified into three categories regardless of their end uses, either domestic or industrial.

1. Loom produced woven carpets: You can have multicolored carpets having intricate designs, woven to cut pile. The multiple color and intricate designs are woven by using different colored yarns. Woven carpets command the highest price in the market.

2. Tufted carpets: These are produced by high speed tufting machines in single colors yarns. Only basic patterns are possible in tufting machines and are sold as low end carpets.

3. Needlefelt carpets: These are used in high traffic places such as hotels etc and are made on high technology machines by synthetic fibers. These are of high quality and cost a lot more than the other two.

Carpets are generally rolled open from wall to wall covering the entire area of the room. They are always exposed to dust and stains such as inks and tea. Carpet cleaning is a specialized service you can hire for cleaning and removing tough stains. But there lot many things you can do to take care of them.

Carpet Care At Home

Since carpets enhance the looks of the room, maintaining them calls for utmost attention. Here we are not talking of cleaning carpets after they are stained. Dirt and sand damage the tiny fibers if they are allowed to stay there. Use rugs outside the front doors which remove maximum dirt there. Avoiding shoes over carpets help a lot. Vacuum clean the carpets regularly.

Dont allow stains to dry, rinse immediately using a stain remover and after you did it, remove the stain remover too. These solvents, if left over, will affect the fibers and colors slowly but surely. How will you remove stain remover? A domestic vacuum cleaner will do. Soak the spot where the solvent is applied and extract it repeatedly until you are satisfied.

If you are thinking of purchasing your first home, and taking your first step onto the property ladder, your head will be spinning with the amount of advice you will come across for first time buyers.

Everybody purchasing a house before you has experienced the same things, so you can take some comfort in that. If you know someone who has recently purchased a house, whether it be for the first time or not, it can be an idea to get some advice in simple terms from them.

Unless you are a person with substantial means, you will likely be looking to purchase your house using a mortgage. Often first time buyers do not have any money saved which they could use as a down payment, or deposit. This means that they will be borrowing 100% of the value of the home, and obviously repayments are going to be higher. If possible, it is always better to purchase a house using the biggest down payment you can afford, thus reducing your monthly repayments.

A 20% down payment is the threshold at which you’re exempt from private mortgage insurance, which can add a few hundred non-tax-deductible dollars to your monthly payment.

If you cannot afford a deposit or down payment you must still find the money for the closing costs of buying your home, if you estimate about 2% 3% of the purchase price then thats a good ball park figure.

There are many different mortgages available on the market, and some are specifically for first time buyers. With so many lenders and so many different types of mortgage, going for one specifically for first time buyers is not always beneficial, so bear that in mind when you are researching.

One last thing, and most importantly is that if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage, or any other loans secured on it, you are at risk of losing it, so dont overstretch yourself, work out how much you can comfortably afford each month and dont go above that. That is one thing you must be very strict on.

A Massage Bathtub. It’s Your Own Private Escape

How often have you thought about going to a Spa and decided against it citing time or financial constraints. Well, you can now have your own home-spa and indulge in unbridled luxury from the comforts of your own home. There are a host of options available in the market when it comes to massage bathtubs.

These bathtubs are extra long, extra deep, and are available in many different variations with regards to the massage components. For e.g. multiple jets massage bath tubs, bubble massage bath tubs etc. Whatever maybe your choice, you can rest assure yourself that after a long day at work, you can sink into your own personal massage bathtub and experience pure bliss. Imagine jets massaging your neck, back, legs etc! It will be relaxation personified. Add to that a soothing music playing in the background and you have created heaven on Earth.

The Air Massage Bath Tubs

One of the most important differences between the massage tubs of spas and your own private massage bathtub is that you can drain the water from your tub after each use.

The air massage bath tubs use a steady stream of air bubbles, which are released into the tub from small holes that are present at the bottom of the bathtub. There are other types of units available that not only have holes at the side of the tub, but also at the back. As many as 70 little holes will pump warm air and thus creates thousands of air bubbles that give you the definitive body massage.

What you essentially get is jet therapy. This is different from the whirlpool system that massages particular parts of your body, as all areas of your body are massaged in this system. It will not only soothe your muscles or joints but also develop, tone, and enhance their strength. Bubbles are inherently gentle in nature and hence a bather can soak in, to their hearts content.

Water Jet or Whirlpool Massage Bath Tub

As the name suggests, massage bath tubs with water jets have a systems wherein, jet features, help in propelling waters through the opening that are present at the side of the bathtubs to offer bathers an effective massage. The only thing to take care of, when you use these massage bathtubs is the fact that you cannot indulge in bubble baths or use bath salts or bath oils while bathing.

One must also ensure that the tub is kept clean, especially, the holes, otherwise the holes will get clogged. These massage tubs; to an extent resemble the whirlpool massage tubs at the spas, not in their structure, but in their working and effect. These tubs are now available with an inbuilt cleaning system, which precludes the need for regular cleaning.

Buying a Massage Bathtub

You must always base your decisions on your personal requirements. Some of the physical considerations while choosing such a bath tub would be the size of your bathroom and the shape of your bathroom. The size is important as the massage bathtub must comfortably fit into your bathroom.

Another factor would be the cost. It would be fair to say that massage bathtubs do not come cheap, but with the various available choices, you can find something that suits your budget. Thoroughly research the market before zeroing in on your choice when it comes to massage bathtubs. After all, they are going to help you relax and invigorate your body. You don’t want a bathtub that proclaims itself to be a superior massage option but does not provide you with the necessary benefits.

So select with due care and experience a haven of comfort and happiness.

There are certain parameters to adjudicate the quality and worth of a thing. For instance a good human being should be a moral and an ethical individual, a good book must be informative, comprehensible and written with a profound thought etc. Similarly the merit of any building, house or workplace is assessed by its aesthetic value and quality of material used in making it.

Besides applying vibrant paints in different color combinations, marble floorings and tiles etc. now something more and exclusive can be done to enhance the aesthetic significance of an edifice. This is the installation of Mosaic Art. Mosaic art involves intermixing differently colored pieces of stones, glass etc. to form various pictures and patterns.

Mosaic is quite an ancient art. It started about 4000 years ago. During 4th and 3rd century BC, Mesopotamians had developed mosaic with thin cones of baked clay that were painted differently at the ends. Similarly Greeks decorated their floors with the help of pebble made mosaics and Macedonians used polychrome pebble mosaics to embellish their structures. But the variation was not confined to mosaic ingredients only for the images so created also differed with different civilizations. For instance early Christian mosaics of 4th and 6th century BC mainly represented hunting scenes, birds and animals. While 7th century Islamic mosaics were mostly floral pictures and scenes. However with the passage of time mosaic art has encountered many changes and has greatly been refined, though the technique is still the same.

Phoenician Arts, a third generation company with a distinguished name in mosaic art industry, has given a new dimension to this art. Phoenician Arts has gifted the world absolutely novel hand-made marble mosaic designs carved out of natural marble and semi-precious stones. It has also revived and reproduced the traditional elite mosaics of the Greeks, Romans and Byzantinians. The mosaics by Phoenician Arts are wonderful paradigms of the primitive and contemporary existence. This is the reason that the mosaic work has successfully replaced the other art forms that exist today. At present mosaics are the most prized and coveted means to augment the aesthetic value of a place or structure.

Since Phoenician Arts develops mosaics for various themes such as medallions, animals, figures & scenes, kitchen related, religious, geometric etc., these are largely and conveniently used to adorn indoors as well as outdoors. Within a house or workplace mosaics can be installed in hallways, dining areas, floor center of living rooms, above the fire place, in an archway and the like. Whereas in case of outdoors mosaics can beautify tabletops, pools, garden areas, entrance of buildings and houses.

The popularity of the Phoenician mosaics is at a surge not only because of their mesmerizing appearance but also due to the advantages they have over other means to decorate houses and places. For instance in comparison to paintings and photographs, these mosaics are more appealing and authentic. Phoenician mosaics are heat and water resistant and so can be installed at places like bathtubs, pools, outer surface and floors of a building. Also these mosaics are easy to clean with least chances of wear and tear. Moreover Phoenician Arts offers the opportunity to customize the mosaics according to the need (budget, ambience of the house, colors, sizes, etc.) of the customer.

While solar energy is most often associated with the production of electricity, heating is also a major platform. While heating isnt particularly difficult, efficiency in doing so is the key to saving wear and tear on your system.

A Key Element In Solar Panels – Efficiency

The sun produces a ton of energy, but solar panel systems have historically been very inefficient at converting it. With improving technology, efficiency has improved to the point where most panel systems can easily produce enough energy to heat water for the home and pools. There are efficient and inefficient ways to go about this process.

To save wear and tear on your panels, you need to consider a flow control system. Older panel systems tend to take a long time to heat up fluid because water more or less randomly circulates through the system. This is very inefficient because the panels are forced to heat up a much larger pool of water than you actually need. This results in wear and tear, not to mention lengthy waits for hot water.

A control flow system attacks the efficiency problem by reducing the amount of water that must be heated. Most are designed to work on temperature differential strategies. They work by using two sensors. The first is located close the panels being used to heat the water or liquid substitute. The second is located on or close to the liquid return valve into the panel system. Put in practical terms, one sensor measures the temperature of liquid set to leave the panel while the other measures the temperature of liquid coming into the panel.

Flow systems work by waiting for the liquid to rise to a temperature determined by you. Once the liquid meets the temperature, the system turns on the circulation pump and moves the liquid to the desired location. Once the return valve sensor notes the temperature of the returning water is within a particular range of the liquid in the panel system, the pump is shut off. This process allows for faster heating times, more efficiency and less wasted energy.

Solar solutions are coming to the front of the energy debate for many residential energy needs. Countries like Germany are making huge investments in solar platforms and technologies. Solar can be a cost-effective solution for you as well. Just keep in mind that flow systems are a must if you are pursuing solar water heating.

Ten Golden Rules of Dieting

Modifying our diet is one of the keys to losing weight.
But the statistics on diet successes aren’t good and only a very small percentage of dieters achieve permanent weight loss.
To help you become one of those that do achieve permanent weight loss from dieting, here are Ten Golden Rules to Dieting that you can trust to help you lose those unwanted inches and pounds.
Rule 1: Never Skip Breakfast
The old saying that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ is certainly on the money when it comes to dieting.
Nothing gets our metabolism going faster than breakfast after a good night’s sleep.
Sleeping causes our metabolism to slow right down and breakfast kick-starts it again for us.
But always remember that just as important as having breakfast itself, it’s also important to choose healthy breakfast options like wholegrain cereals and breads, low-fat dairy products like milk and yogurt, and fruit or fruit juice.
Click here for more information on 9 Best Cloud Hosting Providers and Services Dynomoon. Or click here if you’re looking for information on How to Delete Messages on iPhone for both people The Best Way 2022.Drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep are critically important when we are dieting.
As well as helping to keep us healthy, drinking sufficient amounts of water can help us when dieting because it helps keep us feeling full and stops us from feeling hungry, and when we drink plenty of water we usually drink less soda, coffee and alcohol, all of which can add significant amounts of calories to our daily intake.
New links to the importance of sleep to weight loss are being uncovered all the time.
One case in point was a series of studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association which showed that sleep loss can make weight loss far more difficult than it needs to be.
So to make sure your weight loss doesn’t encounter any hidden barriers to success, drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep.
Rule 3: Count your Calories
Do you know how many calories you need to maintain your current weight and do you know how many calories you therefore need to consume in order to lose weight?
Once you know these things, you also need to keep track of how many calories you consume each day so that you can compare them to your target and make any necessary adjustments.
Writing down your calorie consumption after each meal will help you realize how much of an effect the little piece of candy here and the occasional cookie there has on your weight.
Writing down your calorie consumption needn’t be hard, most of us eat the same things week in week out so chances are you’ll only need to get to know the energy values of a relatively small number of foods and drinks in order to keep track.
Rule 4: Don’t try to lose weight quickly
Gaining significant weight usually takes years and so should losing a significant amount of weight.
Our bodies don’t like sudden and significant change; in fact it is built to resist it.
This resistance has a scientific name called homeostasis.
When our body heats up to a temperature above its preferred level what happens?
We sweat, which is an automatic response designed to cool us down to the preferred level again. That’s homeostasis at work.
When we lose weight too quickly, what happens?
Our body automatically slows down its metabolism, that is, the rate at which we burn energy to survive and function. That’s homeostasis at work again.
In addition to keeping our body from fighting against us on the weight loss front, losing weight too quickly doesn’t work because early rapid weight loss usually results from losing body fluid and muscle tissue which is not healthy nor helpful in our battle to lose weight.
Rapid and significant weight loss from dieting alone is usually indicative of a very calorie restrictive diet which is also counterproductive because for most of us it is unsustainable.
Rule 5: It’s not just what you eat that counts
Weight gain isn’t a sign that we have been eating the wrong food; it is a sign that we have been eating too much food.
The great news about this is that we don’t need to all start eating lettuce to lose weight; we just may need to cut down a little on the foods we enjoy each day.
Rule 6: Keeping your metabolism up
Muscle and activity keep our metabolism up which is why weight training to build or maintain our muscle mass and aerobic activity like walking, jogging, cycling and swimming are so important to those of us wanting to lose weight
Dieting alone is not the best route to weight loss and to staying in an ideal weight range.
To lose weight safely and keep it off for as long as possible, always combine dieting and exercise.
Rule 7: You won’t continue to eat foods you don’t like
Most diets fail because they require us to eat plenty of foods we don’t actually like.
If we don’t like what we’re eating we’re not going to stick with our diet for more than a week or two.
The key to successful dieting is to reduce the amount we eat and introduce healthier and lower calorie options of the foods we like gradually into our diet over time.
Rule 8: Watch what you drink as well as eat
Almost everything we drink, except water, has calories in it.
Drinks highest in calories are typically sodas, colas and alcoholic drinks.
If we typically drink a lot of any of these high calorie drinks, it may be them and not what we’re eating that is causing us to get fat.
This being the case, for many of us simply reducing these drinks or eliminating them altogether from our diet may be all that is necessary for us to lose a significant amount of fat and weight.
Rule 9: Avoid extremes of any kind
Balance is not only the key to a happy, healthy life; it is also the key to a healthy diet and dieting.
Be very weary of any diets that completely cut out some foods or food groups or severely limit some foods or food groups, for example very low or no-carb diets.
Diets that are extreme in one way or another are likely to be very unhealthy at best and very dangerous to our health at worst.
If you’re ever considering such a diet, which will probably promise very rapid and significant results, remember what we said about rapid weight loss and how our body is designed to maintain the status quo.
Rule 10: Seek help
If you have a lot of weight to lose, you’ve got a better chance of success if you get help.
If your weight is affecting your health to such an extent that it is or is becoming life-threatening or is leading to you suffering from weight related diseases like type-2 diabetes, seek medical help from a doctor or professional help from a dietician or another suitably qualified health care professional to lose weight immediately.
Even if your weight isn’t directly affecting your health now, it is a great idea to get help in your battle against the bulge from professionals like dieticians, personal trainers, gyms, psychologists (overeating is often caused by emotional factors) or weight loss program providers and other weight loss specialists.
In addition to getting professional help, non-professional help, support and encouragement is also vital in improving your chances of dieting success.
For this type of help turn to friends, family and the support of other people with similar weight related goals, such as those that can be found on weight loss forums.
Good luck with your weight loss and remember that if you keep in mind the ten golden rules of dieting you are sure to be a dieting success story in the making.

Surgical Hypnosis

When people set aside the usual myths and misconceptions associated with hypnosis good things usually happen. Recently, hypnosis has been getting some positive national exposure increasing the publics general awareness of its health related benefits and its role as an increasingly popular frontline holistic healer. Hypnosis is non-invasive, soothing and once the client understands the process they may continue making healthy changes all on their own.
Hypnosis is the simple process of accessing subconscious thought. The subconscious mind has many important functions; it is where all our values, beliefs, habits and patterns reside. It also is the home of our body’s control center. It regulates our heart rate, breathing and coordinates every step we take.
Having the key to such a powerful place enables us to initiate positive changes supporting how our body responds to situations like stress, fear, pain, depression or even the trauma of surgery. Clients fortunate enough to be given the option of receiving hypnosis prior to, and after surgical procedures, sing its praises. Also, scientific research supports these claims with reduced complications and medication needs; more timely recoveries and shorter hospital stays, which is good for everyone.
“An average savings of $1,200 per patient resulted from this simple 5-minute intervention.” (1)
Another study discovered that the hypnosis group did better than 89% of those who did not receive hypnosis. “These data strongly support the use of hypnosis with surgical patients.” (2)
Hypnosis isn’t magic, its nature. We all go in and out of hypnotic-like trance several times a day. We call it day dreaming or zoning out. Hypnosis is the process of enabling this dream-like state to occur and then offering helpful direction, which support the client’s specific goals.
Surgical hypnosis involves relaxation, improved immune response and circulation that minimizes infection and promotes rapid healing. By increasing endorphin production pain is minimized requiring less medication and the unwanted side effects that usually result. And because the imagination resides in subconscious thought, wonderful images show the client relaxed, comfortable and successful further reinforcing this positive plan.
This healthy direction creates a blueprint, which becomes reality. Surgical Hypnosis disconnects patterns of fear and worry. It puts the client in the drivers seat when need they need it most. In life we all follow the path of our most dominant thoughts and with hypnosis you get the unique opportunity to create the thoughts and images, which serve you best. What your mind conceives your body achieves.

Hypnosis is a relationship of trust and co-operation. If a client believes the hypnotist is working in their best interest they are likely to be more open minded and accepting, ensuring positive results.
It is impossible to predict the outcome of any treatment option but when clients understand the technique, benefits and are involved with the process, results are consistently positive. Also, considering the mountain of research supporting clinical hypnosis as an effective compliment to traditional medicine, the time has come to open the door to this and other holistic options.
An advocate and practitioner of surgical hypnosis is Elvira Lang MD. Dr. Lang teaches at Harvard University and is the Director of Interventional Radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston, MA. Her study involved 241 patients receiving percutaneous vascular and renal procedures either received no special treatment, structured attention or self-hypnotic relaxation. “Structured attention and self-hypnotic relaxation proved beneficial during invasive medical procedures. Hypnosis had more profound effects on pain and anxiety reduction, and is superior, in that it also improves hemodynamic stability.” (4)
Other studies reveal more positive results:
“Positive intraoperative suggestions seem to have a significant effect in reducing morphine requirements in the early postoperative period.” (5)
“Patients in the hypnosis group had significantly less vomiting, 39% compared to 68% in the control group, less nausea and less need of analgesics postoperatively. Preoperative hypnotic techniques in breast surgery contribute to a reduction of both post operative nausea and vomiting and postoperative analgesic requirements.” (6)
“Anxiety before the operation increased significantly in the control group but remained at baseline level in the experimental (hypnosis) group. Postoperative consumption of analgesics was significantly reduced in the experimental (hypnosis) group compared to the control (non-hypnosis) group.” (7)
“A significant correlation was found between anxiety and perceived knowledge of procedures. The results suggest that pre-operative hypnosis provides a quick and effective way to reduce pre-operative patient anxiety and anesthetic requirements for gynecological daycare surgery.” (8)
Through the early 20th century the debate was if hypnosis existed at all. The American Medical Association said it did in 1958 and since then hypnosis has been dissected and analyzed and the positive results are available for anyone to read.
Now the debate is over and the verdict is in. It may not be for everyone, but what is? Hypnosis is safe, relaxing and an effective option for clients going through the trauma of surgery. There are no side effects or allergic reactions and it costs next to nothing. Some also believe that it should be the client’s right, not the hospital’s option, as to which holistic supports are available. Someday soon it will hopefully be as simple as selecting ‘hypnosis’ on a pre-op check list.
