Are you tired of waiting for your children to grow up so you can finally let go of your tired, worn couch? Have a real dining room set? Or even lighter toned furnishings?
If you thought that having a family meant putting your decorating skills and ideas on the back burner then you just haven’t been opening your eyes to the stylish ideas designers use to liven up their own homes and their client’s homes, even with children (and pets) around!
CHOOSING MATERIALS
Choosing the right material can make all the difference when furnishing a home for a family.
Have you always loved leather? Well it’s not only great for minor spills that are quickly wiped off, it also wears well, even gaining a beautiful patina with time and use. Leather does not collect pet hair as a cloth couch or chair would, and crumbs and dirt will wipe off easily.
If you prefer fabric upholstery, think of luxurious Ultrasuede. Sophisticated enough for even the most formal rooms, it looks belie the easy care of the material. You won’t deal with fading or staining the way you are accustomed to with cotton, and many stains will come off quite easily with a damp cloth.
Do you have real ruffians running around? You can always count on slipcovers if you need to. Many decorators have used white or cream slipcovers to good effect, although you may consider a stripe or other pattern to disguise everyday wear. And because you can clean them thoroughly by removing them you do not have to be too concerned about occasional messes.
Slipcovers also work well on fancy dining room chairs and can be removed for adult-only dinner parties.
Try to stay away from delicate materials like silks or velvets which stain easily and are difficult to clean.
SAFE CHOICES
If you have small children you may also consider choosing soft furnishings, like ottomans, to replace hazards such as hard edged coffee tables.
Area rugs can be great for keeping light colored carpets in good shape, but be certain they rest flat so children are not prone to trip over them. Selecting heavy rugs or using a special padding underneath to reduce movement would be especially recommended when using rugs on hard, slippery surfaces.
When choosing wood furnishings, light or dark, be sure it has a protective clear coat so that marks and spills do not ruin the finish.
PROVIDING CHILDREN WITH THEIR OWN SPACE
Would your children really mind an ‘adult’ space in the home? If you make most of the home child-friendly, then it is not outside of reason to create one area specifically for adult entertaining or relaxing. Giving children a small area within the adult room where they can read books or sit at a small table for quiet games will teach them to respect and take care of nice things. This, along with making reasonable choices for the rest of the home, allows all in the family to enjoy their surroundings and each other.

Leather furnishings and accessories can add elegance, style and drama to your home d cor. Nothing says masculine, classic and American, like excellent quality leather goods. However, leather furnishings and accessories can be an expensive investment. Learning how to properly clean and care for these items is critical to their longevity and beauty. But, if given proper cleaning and care, leather furnishings can bring unsurpassed beauty and elegance into our homes and offer a lifetime of service.
There are three basic rules for caring of fine leather. Never expose leather goods to liquids or high humidity, as this may cause the leather to discolor and/or the dye to run. Never expose leather to excessive direct sunlight, as this may cause discoloration or fading. Clean and protect your leather every six months. If your leather receives heavy usage, you should clean it every three months. Basic cleaning items are saddle soPDD1 or a good water-based leather cleaner which will remove minor dirt and stains, as well as to help the bed of the leather retain its natural oils and finish.
Most all leathers furnishings, with the exception of suede, can be cleaned using mild water-based leather cleaners. Always pre-test in an inconspicuous area for colorfastness using a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. If the leather passes the colorfastness test, apply your leather cleaner to a sponge, squeezing to produce foam. Apply the foam to the soiled area using a gentle circular motion. Never Rub. Apply the foam in light coats, wait a few minutes, and then blot with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Re-apply is the area is heavily soiled. Leather can be extremely dry and this may cause the leather cleaner to dissipate quickly. If this happens, add one-part distilled water to three-parts leather cleaner. This will dampen the area enough to release the soil from the area youre cleaning. Allow the leather to dry naturally. After drying, apply a leather conditioner to restore moisture to dry leather and to provide protection from future soiling.
To clean home furnishings or accessories made of suede leather, use a suede cleaning cloth. (This is a specialty cleaning cloth that has a tacky feel to it and is available from most fine leather cleaning suppliers). The suede cleaning cloth will raise the nPDD1 and scrape off the soil from the nap, and remove dark or shiny areas as well. Use the cleaning cloth wrapped around a dry sponge and use only on dry leather. Use the cloth only on the same color leather. Do not use the same suede cleaning cloth to clean tan leather and then red leather. A suede cleaning cloth can be used when you are doing your regular dusting and will help to maintain your suede accessory and keep it looking like new. After cleaning, apply a light coat of an aerosol suede protector over the entire piece. This will form a barrier to improve stain resistance and make it easier to clean in the future. After the spray has dried, rub the surface with a dry sponge to return the suede texture.
With regular care and maintenance, your leather home furnishings and accessories will provide you with a lifetime of service.

For centuries leather has been used for its functionality as well as its prestige. Back in the dark ages, hides were being used for warmth and protection in the form of crude coats and makeshift shoes. In those times, leather decay would begin after only a short time making for a very inefficient process.
Today we have perfected the tanning process making leather the strongest and longest lasting upholstery material. Most reputable leather furniture companies use leather that has been preserved in the tanning process. Properly tanned leather can last up to four times longer than most any other upholstery fabric. Given its durability and the pure elegance of leather furniture, you can most assuredly be prepared to spend a bit more for it. The good news is leather requires very little care.
Here are some important steps you can take to help protect your leather furniture:
Probably the most important thing to remember is to clean stains immediately! If you do not, the stain can reappear weeks or months later. Just use mild soPDD1 and warm water.
Keep your furniture away from heat sources. At least two feet is recommended. Leather can become dried out if exposed for long periods.
Avoid direct sunlight. This will prevent fading.
To dust use a clean cloth with a small amount of leather cleaner.
Never use saddle soap, furniture polish, oil, varnish, abrasive or ammonia based cleansers.
All leather furniture needs reconditioning on a regular basis. This process replaces the natural hide oils that dry out and cause the leather to crack.
Please note the above is for preventative maintenance and you may have a specific problem which may call for more action. Cleaning leather furniture can be tricky and you should always do a spot test to check for color fastness. If it is something major like scrapes, cuts, holes or grease and oil stains it is recommended that you seek professional assistance.
Take the time to get to know your furniture. Look for differences in grade of leather, type of dye and finishing. Your furniture retailer should be able to supply you with this information. If you take care of your leather furniture, it will last at least 20 years.

Meal planning and bulk cooking are both wonderful techniques you can utilize and modify to fit your families needs. The idea behind this is simple. The principle is that you cook and or prepare your meals ahead of time and then preserve them by either freezing or fridgerating them. Also, meal planning you can cook one large meal and get 2-3 other meals out of it! The key here is to make every meal you cook count!
When you are going to prepare a family favorite, double, triple, even quadruple the recipe if it will keep in the freezer. Sound wonderful doesnt it? Why not give yourself a much-needed break — cook ahead today so you can relax tomorrow!
The first step in meal planning is always the most challenging. To make it less challenging I suggest that you grab the following supplies: Pen, paper, your personal recipe collection or your favorite cookbook and a comfortable chair.
Start by writing down a list of your favorite meals and plan on preparing a grocery list that will coincide with your list. Now, since we are talking bulk cooking here if you normally would serve up one pot of spaghetti plan to serve 2 (that would mean that you will have to double the recipe so be sure to alter your shopping list accordingly) It will take the same amount of time to cook just a little extra planning is needed.
Next you can use a blank calendar and simply write the meals down on the day you will serve them. I personally post my meal plan up on my refrigerator for the entire house to see. This also helps to prompt me for the next day of meals that will be served.
The most important tool in meal planning and bulk cooking is your freezer. If you have a small freezer, dont fret; you can fit many meals in that small freezer space it will just call for a little more creativity on your part. With the use of freezer bags, that you can stack flat and the use of some freezer proof containers you will be surprised at how many meals your freezer can hold.
Here are a few essential and widely used meal planning techniques and tips:
Multi-recipes ~ Using this strategy requires you to cook many main course meals in one day. For instance, on a Sunday morning you could prepare a roast in your Crock pot, some spaghetti on top of the stove, a baked Chicken in the oven and perhaps a nice salad. You also could quarter and boil some potatoes, cook some rice and some veggies (either fresh or canned). What you now have is 5 different meals that you can use throughout the entire week. You can eat one of the meals that very evening and you could Freeze or refrigerate the rest. This technique works very well for some people and it provides a wide variety of dishes that you can use. I personally use this technique from time to time. I usually do my multi-recipe cooking on a Sunday and it can take up to 5 hrs to complete but what you are left with is 2 weeks worth of food that you can enjoy. And notice that the meals that I use in my Multi-recipe list are easy to prepare.
One Cook Wonder ~ With this strategy you would cook one main course recipe that can be used for different meals. For Instance, lets say you just baked a large turkey. You could slice some of the turkey off and serve the breast with gravy, dice some of the turkey and prepare a turkey gumbo and use the rest for either a soup or turkey salad. Mind you, you do not have to prepare all of those meals on one day. After the Turkey has been cooked and cooled, you can freeze and refrigerate the turkey that you cut off the carcass and prepare your other Turkey related meals at a different time.
Quick and Easy meals ~ Be sure to incorporate those quick and easy meals into your planning process. If your family loves Sloppy Joes cook up the sloppy joe meat in bulk and freeze it then all you need to do is defrost the meat, grab some buns and viola.
What about Hamburger Helper? Why not cook 2-3 boxes of it, separate it into 3 separate large containers and freeze them. That idea alone allows you to prepare 3 meals in just 30-minutes.
Designate a meal for a particular night ~ Every Friday night in my house is either Pizza or burger night. The idea here is to choose any night of the week and just designate a meal to go with that night. I always make sure that I have plenty of Frozen Pizzas with a variety of toppings on hand in my freezer. The same goes for those Turkey burger patties (my family doesnt eat much ground beef). The idea behind this process is that you now have one nights meal already planned. You can also stock up on that meal when the products are on sale. If you see Frozen pizzas being sold in bulk, grab them up!
Love your leftovers ~ This is one of my favorite parts of meal planning as it allows you to use your imagination. At least every other week or so be sure to go through your refrigerator and take inventory of what you have in there. When you combine 2-3 leftovers, you may find that you have a meal right there. You can use left over pasta from spaghetti to prepare a pasta salad, leftover spaghetti sauce and just a few pieces of chicken can be a wonderful dish to top with cheese and place in the oven. Again, with a little imagination you can make your leftovers work for you!
Use the sales paper ~ everyone loves a good sale and I use the sales paper to help me in my meal planning. When I see our Family favorites on sale instead of buying one, I will purchase 3-4 of the same items and simply come home and prepare the meals or freeze the food that I purchased. My family and I love Chicken. When I spot whole chickens on sale Ive been known to purchase up to 5-6 at a time. Keep in mind that I have a family of 6 and in my family of six; there are 3 teenagers (and you know how much they can consume). By shopping like this, I actually save hundreds and hundreds of dollars a year in food alone!
Helpful supplies
Labels/freezer bags/Freezer-proof containers: Be sure that you have all of your freezing and refrigerating needs on hand. When storing food in freezer safe containers be sure to place a label on the container with the name of the meal and the date the meal was prepared.
Crockpot: This handy appliance is my best friend in the kitchen. When using a crockpot you literally prepare the meal, place it in the crockpot, Set it & Forget it. It is a hands free cooking experience. I cook whole chickens in my crock pot and then slice the chicken up to freeze and use for sandwiches, enchiladas, chicken salads, chicken soup, chicken stew.. as you can see the possibilities are endless.
As you can see, meal planning is a money, sanity and time saver – what else could a busy mom ask for?
Now, lets get Cookin!

Decorative pillows are the perfect way to add a personal touch to any room. However, despite their small size, these pillows can be quite expensive, especially when you buy three or four of them. Luckily, it is quite easy to learn how to make a pillow.
The first step to making a pillow is to select your fabric and trims. You will also need to select a filling for your pillow, decide what shape you want your pillow to be, and whether you want your pillow to have a removable cover.
As you select your fabric, keep in mind that many decorative pillows are made using at least two contrasting fabrics. Of course, for your first attempt at making a decorative pillow, you may only want to use one fabric. There are several important things you should keep in mind when you are choosing fabrics.
1. Knit fabrics and slippery materials are hard to work with.
2. Thin cotton fabrics do not usually make a spectacular pillow unless you are using a quilt block design.
3. Geometric prints are more difficult to work with than random designs, since you will need to match the prints up.
When you are selecting your pillows filling, you will need to decide whether you will be making a removable cover. If so, a pillow form is the best choice, since you certainly wouldnt want to have to remove loose stuffing to wash the pillow and then replace it again after the pillow was clean. However, most decorative pillows are made without removable covers and can be stuffed with polyester fiber filling or chopped foam.
The easiest pillow to sew is probably a simple square pillow without any cording. To make your pillow, cut two squares of fabric that are one half inch bigger than your finished pillow measurement on each side. Place the two squares so that they are on top of each other and so that the brighter side of each square faces the other squares brighter side. (People who work with fabric call the brighter side of a piece of fabric the right side.)
Now you are ready for the fun part. Sew around three sides of the fabric squares, using a half inch seam allowance. (A seam allowance is the measurement from the edge of the fabric to where you want the sewing machine to stitch the fabric.) On the fourth side of the squares, sew a third of the way in from each side. This leaves you with an open space in the middle of that side. Use that space to turn your pillow right side out.
Finally, you are ready to finish your pillow. Stuff it firmly and then hand stitch the opening closed. Now, you can repeat the process to make a matching pillow.

Ceramic tiles can be used throughout the house to add an extra element of design to any room. You can put ceramic tiles behind the stove to add a decorative accent to the kitchen. You can put them in various places in the bathroom and other places throughout the house. In order to install the ceramic tile yourself, you need to learn essential skills. The most important skill is how to cut ceramic tile. Here is some advice.
When learning how to cut ceramic tile, you need to first understand that there are some safety considerations. You must always wear goggles. When you cut ceramic tiles, dust forms and it may have sharp edges. If this dust lodges in your eyes, it can cause some damage. Also make sure you learn and use the proper technique when using power tools to prevent injury.
The next step to take when learning how to cut ceramic tile is to measure the area where you will put the tile. Calculate exactly how many tiles you will need and figure out how many tiles need to be cut. Remember that you will need to take into account the space needed for the grout when making your calculations.
Once you measure, you are ready to start cutting the ceramic tile. You can either use a tile cutter or tile jig. If you decide to use a tile cutter, measure the area to be cut. Use the tile cutter to make an indentation in the tile. Take a straight edge and hold it next to the cut. Move the tile cutter up and down the straight edge to make the indentation deeper. Once it is deep enough, slowly work the tile back and forth in your hands or with a pair of pliers to eventually break the pieces in half. If you decide to use the tile jig, remember to use proper safety procedure and to follow the manufacturers instructions.
Learning how to cut ceramic tile is a valuable skill. Ceramic tiles are a great way to add accents to any room. Remember to use proper safety techniques and wear goggles. Before you begin cutting, make sure you measure and learn the proper use for your tools.

DPMNY Grandfather Clocks- Relive The Magic

341

Every child in high school learns that a pendulum’s rate of swing (period) is proportional to its length. This is the only factor that affects the period. Galileo discovered this in 1582.

Today’s grandfather clocks are the descendents of William Clement’s clock from 1670. He had discovered that a longer pendulum meant more accurate timekeeping. The long pendulum had to be enclosed to prevent children (and adults) playing with it. Hence the long-case clock was invented. The…
